My Favorite Things: Printing Edition

I'd like to share some of the tools I use when I'm creating my cards. I figured I'd start with the stuff I use when I'm actually printing. So, here you are!

1. My Speedball Soft Rubber Brayer. I love this baby. It's very good with spreading the ink out evenly on the stamp. Before I tried the soft rubber, I tried the hard rubber, and I wasn't as successful.

2. My painting knives. I got these at Blick, and I love the shape and different angles I can use to pick up little bits of ink. The trick to getting knives cheaper is to wander outside of the printing section (where they are ridiculously high priced) and into the painting section. The difference is that there's a lot more shapes of knives, and they're a lot cheaper.

3.Blick Block Printing Ink. I love the water-soluble inks because they are so easy to clean off of anything. I haven't been able to tell much difference between the Blick brand and the Speedball brand, so buying the basic colors in the Blick brand made a lot more sense, since they're cheaper.

4. Speedball Block Printing Ink and Ink Retarder. I got the Speedball ink in the non-primary colors because I liked the shades better than the Blink brand. Like I said, I don't see any noticeable difference when printing, so it's all about color preferences. I also use the Speedball ink retarder. I use a lot of this stuff, thus the big bottle. I find the metallics need a little more than normal colors.

5. Last but not least, my ink plate. For this, I basically just picked up a piece of glass at American Science and Surplus here in Chicago. It's a piece of fireplace glass (rated to withstand a lot of heat, apparently, though that isn't important to me) and the edges are rounded off. It's just the right size- any bigger, and I'd have trouble storing it!

So now you've seen some of the tools I use to print. Next up, I'll be sharing my favorite items for making my stamps!
